Global Studies Courses

The IS Department currently offers one course designed to satisfy HPU's Global Studies course requirement... MIS311 / GBS311 - Information Systems in a Global Environment. (Three hours credit. No prerequisites.)

Students are introduced to the use of information systems in various regions of the World, paying special attention to the ways that IS use and government policies concerning information systems affect the lives of individuals. Group research and presentations on specific topics during the term and an individual research project are required. This course is reading and communications intensive.

MIS/GBS311 is intended primarily for juniors and seniors who are interested in a communications intensive course concerning research into the effects of modern information technology on individuals, organizations, and societies throughout the World.

Issues considered are current and controversial and recently published "seed articles" from widely-read and respected sources are assigned and discussed. Articles are in English. However, non-American sources are sought including United Nations and World Bank source. As well, regular publications are referenced, the chief of which is the Economist, a weekly newsmagazine published in the UK. Other possible sources include such on-line newspapers as the Straight Times (Singapore), the Japan Times (Tokyo), the Sunday Times (Johannesburg), and the Jordan Times (Amman).
