The Department of Information Systems currently offers a minor in Management Information Systems

Management Information Systems Minor
The Management Information Systems (MIS) minor introduces students to the knowledge and skills needed to be bridge-builders between the technical personnel who develop systems and the non-technical users of those systems. This minor makes a particularly good choice for accounting majors, who will have have completed MIS 200 to fulfill the requirements of the School of Business and ACC 208 as an accounting major requirement.

Four Required Courses

MIS 200. Management Information Systems.*

(Three hours credit. Prerequisite: Sophomore standing or approval of Chair.) 
The primary focus is to bridge the gap between business needs and information systems solutions. The student is expected to understand how information technology can be effectively applied to business strategy and to supporting business processes.

MIS 231. Database I. (Three hours credit. Prerequisites: none.)
The student will be introduced to relational database application development using Microsoft Access.

MIS 310. Systems Development. (Three hours credit. Prerequisites: MIS 231.)
The student will be introduced to systems development from the point of view of the business analyst.

MIS 331. Business Networking. (Three hours credit. Prerequisites: Junior standing.)
The student will be introduced to business data communications. Emphasis will be on acquiring the conceptual knowledge needed to effect a successful business interaction with networking personnel.

 

Choose Two of the Following

ACC 208.  Accounting Information Systems.** (Three hours credit.  Prerequisites:  ACC 203.)

ISP 205. E-security and strategy. (Three hours credit. Prerequisites: none.)
The student will study the domains addressed by information security and the goals of an effective information security program. A survey of current tools and methods used to protect customer privacy and implement and manage a corporate information security program will be conducted. Three hours credit.

MIS 420. Business Intelligence Systems. (Three hours credit. Prerequisites: MIS 231.)
The student will be introduced to the concepts and tools of business intelligence systems.

MIS 421. E-Business. (Three hours credit. Prerequisites: MIS 110 and Junior standing.)
The student will be introduced to the concepts and tools of electronic commerce.
